For Travel Professionals
Japan Adventurer
A Regional Japan DMC for Overseas Travel Professionals
Japan Adventurer is a Japan-based destination management company working with overseas travel agencies, tour operators and DMCs. We provide itinerary planning, domestic arrangements, guiding and on-the-ground support, with a particular focus on regional Japan.
Our work is centred on western Japan and the Setouchi region rather than the usual Tōkyō–Kyōto route. We combine the local knowledge and networks of Japanese tourism professionals with the perspective of long-term foreign residents of Japan. We see adventure in a broad sense: it can mean getting outdoors, but it can just as easily mean discovering local food, history, culture or ways of life. This approach helps us create experiences that make sense to overseas travellers while staying true to the places and people involved.
Product development from the perspective of ex-pat residents
One of Japan Adventurer’s strengths is that our foreign-resident staff are closely involved in developing our products. Having lived, worked and travelled extensively in regional Japan, we have a good understanding of what can be fascinating to an overseas traveller, as well as what may need explanation or context.
When developing an itinerary, we consider:
- What overseas travellers are likely to value
- Which aspects of Japanese culture may be unfamiliar or easily misunderstood
- How individual experiences can be brought together into a coherent journey
This is backed by a strong understanding of Japanese daily life, history, culture and religion, together with practical experience of outdoor and nature-based activities. The aim isn’t simply to put together a list of attractions. We want to create journeys that give travellers a better understanding of the region and the people who live there.
Regional knowledge and local relationships
Japan Adventurer is based in the Setouchi region and works extensively across western Japan. Being based here gives us a practical advantage: we work directly with the local businesses and people involved in our programmes.
These include ryokan and small accommodation providers, producers, artisans, guides, restaurants and other local businesses. We can therefore:
- Deal directly with small-scale accommodation and experience providers
- Arrange experiences that can be difficult to organise remotely
- Develop and maintain relationships with local businesses and communities
- Make practical decisions based on first-hand knowledge of the region
This local presence helps us develop itineraries that are not only interesting, but also realistic and workable on the ground.
Planning and on-the-ground support
Japan Adventurer can act as a single point of contact for overseas partners, from initial itinerary development through to delivery in Japan.
Our services include:
- Itinerary planning and development, particularly for FITs, private groups and themed tours
- Accommodation, transport, meals, local guides and experiences
- On-the-ground coordination and adjustments during a trip
- Professional interpreter-guides who are based in the regions they guide and know them well
- Shinkansen and limited express tickets, Japan Rail Passes and regional transport arrangements
We can work with an existing itinerary or help develop a programme from scratch, depending on what you need.
Examples of our product development
Shikoku Pilgrimage tours
The Shikoku Pilgrimage is one of Japan’s best-known cultural journeys, but its history and spiritual background aren’t always easy for overseas travellers to understand.
We’ve developed a range of pilgrimage tours that put the journey into context, explaining the connections between faith, landscape, history and everyday life. The approach has been shaped by foreign staff who have experienced the pilgrimage themselves and considered how its meaning can best be explained to an international audience.
Our pilgrimage programmes vary from shorter introductions to more substantial journeys, allowing us to adapt the experience to different interests and levels of commitment.

Setouchi Fishing and Culinary Adventure
This experience has been developed through direct relationships with local fishermen, producers and chefs.
Guests take part in fishing activities, learn about handling and preparing local fish, and explore the food culture of the area with local culinary professionals. Interpreter-guides help bridge the language and cultural gap throughout the experience.
Rather than simply combining several tourist activities, the programme has grown out of long-standing relationships with the people who actually live and work in the area.
